    The Department of Biochemistry, a large and flourishing academic community that enjoys a world-class reputation for both teaching and research, is embedded in the School of the Biological Sciences. A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic communications specialist to join the Department as Communications & Engagement Co-ordinator.

    Based in a busy and friendly professional services team, and reporting to the Head of Department and Departmental Administrator, the successful candidate will take responsibility for internal and external facing departmental communications in order to raise the profile and impact of research activity to diverse internal and external audiences and stakeholders, by producing high-quality and engaging digital and social media content that enhances the Department’s image and reputation as a modern, progressive academic teaching and research institution.

    In collaboration with key stakeholders, the successful candidate will play an important role in developing the Department’s communications and engagement strategy, and will design, write, and publish articles about the Department’s work, manage its website, social media presence, and monitor press coverage across all outlets. They will also ensure that the Department’s outreach activity delivers a two-way dialogue between researchers and participants, collaborating in University-wide public engagement initiatives.

    With a flair for publicity and an eye for creative detail, the successful candidate will plan new content, write excitedly about our science and other activities, identify outreach opportunities, and forge relationships with our teaching & learning and research communities, telling their stories to a diverse audience.

    Educated first degree level or equivalent, the ideal applicant will be able experienced in organising public engagement activities and communicating professionally and widely. Knowledge of, or interest in, the biological sciences would be advantageous.

    Dynamic Earth is Edinburgh’s science centre and the only centre of its kind in the UK dedicated to Earth and environmental sciences.     An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team in the position of Learning and Engagement Officer. In this role, you will work alongside colleagues in the wider Learning and Engagement team to co-ordinate, develop and deliver a range of different learning experiences – including but not limited to indoor and outdoor workshops, drop-in activities and online experiences – for a range of audiences including school pupils, teachers, children and young people and families. This is a science communication role with a key focus on delivering a range of experiences with audiences, particularly with school pupils.     Dynamic Earth - Edinburgh Geological Society   

    This is a science communication role of both formal and informal learning and engagement programmes where you will play an active role in the delivery and further development of our school learning and engagement experiences and associated public engagement, family and outdoor learning activities.

     

    MAIN DUTIES:

    DELIVERING AND DEVELOPING OUR SCHOOL LEARENING AND ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMME:

    • Facilitating workshops, storytelling and other activities in line with the Curriculum for Excellence and Learning for Sustainability
    • Developing the schools programme with a focus on Earth and environmental sciences.
    • Delivering and developing workshops and experiences as in-reach, outreach and digitally

    DELIVERING AND DEVELOPING OUR FAMILY AND PUBLIC PROGRAMME:

    • Supporting the delivery of workshops, activities, shows to public, community and families with colleagues across the team
    • Supporting the development of the public programme with a focus on Earth and environmental sciences with colleagues across the team

    DELIVERING AND DEVELOPING OUR OUTDOOR LEARNING PROGRAMME:

    • Working with schools, families, young people and community audiences to engage participants in Earth and environmental sciences within our local environment of Holyrood Park.
    • Assisting in the delivery and development of outdoor learning activities, including our Summer Outdoor Club programme for children and young people.

    THROUGHOUT THIS, YOU WILL:

    • Work to ensure school and public engagement activities are delivered to a consistently high standard with scientific integrity as core.
    • Work with schools and other stakeholders to ensure the full potential of the Learning and Engagement service is achieved.
    • Liaise with professionals to ensure the learning and engagement programmes remain current, reflecting the latest research and topical science.

     

    OTHER DUTIES:

    • Liaising with teachers and other educational representatives/organisations and soliciting feedback to ensure the schools programme and educational resources are focused, relevant, topical and appropriately targeted to the curriculum.
    • Ensuring that all educational equipment and resources are properly maintained and that usage is properly recorded and managed.
    • Contributing to the development of the Dino’s Kids’ club as required.
    • Attending education exhibitions, conferences and presentations as required.
    • Updating your own knowledge of the material interpreted within the centre and the curriculum, on an ongoing basis in order to deliver the highest quality learning programme.
    • Ensuring that correct budgetary control, invoicing and follow up procedures are followed, in conjunction with other departments.
    • Any other duties as required at the discretion of the Learning and Engagement Manager

     

    KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

     

    • Educated to degree level in a science or related discipline or lived experience as an alternative to a formal qualification (essential)

    Purpose

    At the front line of the organisation, lnspirers directly deliver our core charitable aim of sparking curiosity.

    These roles are the explainers, guiding visitors through a universe of possibilities and being enthusiastic role models who may lead to a lifetime of discovery.

    Delivery is core to the role and lnspirers can expect to spend the majority of their time interacting with audiences of all ages and abilities, delivering live science shows in the Science Theatre, wowing audiences with live demos in Science Live, guiding students through the Ultimate STEM School Trip, exploring the universe in our state-of-the-art accessible Planetarium, supporting families with ecological activities in Bio:Space and roaming the Centre to explain the science behind exhibits. lnspirers will also deliver our outreach workshops to schools and groups, including our mobile planetarium.

    No two days are the same, with lnspirers donning lab coats to explosively demonstrate energy transfer one day, presenting a show to over 100 people, cleaning or organising classroom spaces or researching exciting content for a new topic the next day. lnspirers work directly with Curiosity Officers to develop our outstanding people-led experiences.

    Situated in the STEM department, the role is line managed by one of the Curiosity Officers, while instruction and supervision will also come from the rest of the Officer team or other STEM department managers.

    Key responsibilities

    We are looking for two highly motivated team players to join our science engagement team to lead the day to day running, development and delivery of our schools and communities’ programmes at Life. The role involves working within a fast-paced, busy environment with hundreds of school students visiting every week. We deliver exciting, relevant, and interactive STEM experiences that cannot be replicated in the classroom including hands-on, curriculum-linked practical workshops. We are also growing our community offer, engaging with local families and young people in the centre and in the community.

    You will need to work closely with the other Schools and Communities Lead and the rest of the team to provide a smooth-running, engaging, and inspiring programme of activities for  students and local communities.  

    You will supervise, train, mentor, and support the development of the delivery team to offer our core programme of school workshops which cover a range of STEM topics for 4–19-year-olds.     The Francis Crick Institute is looking for a science show provider to present to school children aged 12-13 in our central London auditorium.

    Every year in the Summer term the Crick Education Team provide a Cracking Crick interactive science show for local secondary schools. The dates for 2023 are July 3rd and 4th.

    Do you have the enthusiasm for science education and charisma for presenting that means you could lead the next Cracking Cricks? We are looking for pre-existing or new material for these shows. Deadline for submissions is 15th November 2022

    SCIENCE SHOW PROPOSAL

    Information for applicants

    The Crick is seeking a Science Show provider to present to school children

    aged 12-13 using either pre-existing or new material.

    Context

    To complement other outreach activities at the Crick, the Crick contracts an external

    individual/organisation to provide an interactive, exciting 1-hour science show for local students

    in Year 8 (aged 12-13 years). Hosted at the Crick and repeated over two days toward the end of

    the academic year, the show aims to enthuse students about science related to the STEM

    curriculum, and promote the Crick as being the type of place they could see themselves visiting

    and working in the future.

    We are reviewing our offer for Key Stage 3 students and welcome proposals from experienced

    science show presenters to deliver a new or pre-existing show that is engaging and appropriate

    for Year 8 students in Camden. Subject to satisfactory delivery of the initial shows, we

    anticipate continuing the contract for another 3-5 years.

    Audience

    Year 8 students from Camden state schools, with typically 2-5 schools attending per show.

    The audience, comprising as it does all members of the local school community, is anticipated to

    include individuals that will have a range of backgrounds, abilities, disabilities and

    neurodivergencies.

    Show content and education programme objectives

    The show should:

    - last for approx. 1 hour

    - be delivered to up to 400 students and accompanying adults per show

    - be repeated 5 times over two consecutive days (2023 dates are confirmed as Monday 3rd

    and Tuesday 4th July)

    - include topics on the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum science programme of study in

    England

    - make a clear link between STEM topics taught in school and research topics and scientific

    techniques of the Crick

    - have a clear narrative

    - be scientifically accurate and reflect the terminology and concept level expected by the

    National Curriculum. The show must not include any medical advice.

    - include interactive elements e.g. whole-audience voting, individual volunteer

    participation on stage etc.

    - be engaging for Year 8 students across the ability and ‘interest in science’ spectrum

    - Have a flexible approach to accommodate the access needs of particular audience

    members wherever possible– potentially at short notice.

    Venue

    - 400 seater auditorium at the Francis Crick Institute (1 Midland Road, London, NW1 1AT).

    Weekday access to the auditorium before performances is available to set up

    equipment/resources.

    - access to a teaching laboratory (the Weston Discovery Lab) adjacent to the auditorium,

    available for storage and preparation of show resources.

    Presenter attributes

    Presenters should:

    be engaging for a Year 8 audience

    - be comfortable working with Key Stage 3 audiences of several hundred students

    - demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity towards the viewpoints and concerns of

    an audience of this age

    - be aware of the discourse on accessibility for audiences

    - encourage and confidently manage audience participation

    - confidently handle and to best abilities manage challenging behaviour from audiences

    - be flexible to accommodate last minute delays or changes on the day

    Presenter teams should not:

    - present roles within the team that reinforce gender, racial or other stereotypes

    Deliverables

    If your proposal is successful, you will be required to:

    - attend an initial meeting with the Education team to discuss details of the show in the

    context of the venue, and tailor the plan if necessary

    - pilot the show at least once, demonstrating that it meets the objectives of the education

    programme as itemised above, and tailor if necessary

    - submit a detailed risk assessment for the show a minimum of 6 weeks before show date

    and implement any further risk mitigation identified by the Crick’s Health & Safety team

    - provide evidence of employer’s and/or public liability insurance (we reserve the right to

    request additional insurance coverage if required)

    - provide all materials and staff to perform the show (Crick staff will be on hand to

    manage the audience’s movements in and out of the venue, but presenters will need to

    manage all show volunteers).

    - deliver five 1-hour shows over Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th July 2023. The first 1-hour

    show will start no earlier than 9am and the last show will start no later than 3pm.

    - contribute to post-show feedback and refinement discussions and implement any agreed

    modifications for future shows

    The Education team will:

    - provide guidance and feedback around meeting objectives and tailoring the show where

    necessary

    - recruit school audiences to attend the shows, and be the central point of contact for

    school groups

    - recruit and brief staff to oversee visitors before, during and after the show

    - arrange a pre-show visit of the venue for presenter(s)

    - arrange AV support where needed

    - assist in getting all equipment needed for the show into and out of the venue

    - arrange for appropriate storage of materials needed for the show

    - evaluate the show and provide feedback

    The Francis Crick Institute will:

    - pay the performer/organisation for services in line with standard contractual terms and

    conditions

    Budget

    Your proposal should include the total cost for delivering the show as stated above, excluding

    VAT. You should also indicate if you/your organisation is VAT registered. Costs should include

    staff time, tailoring the show where required, all materials, travel and accommodation where

    needed.

    Key dates

    Deadline for submitting show proposal: 15th November 2022

    Short-listing and interviews/visits to shows: November/December 2022

    Notification of successful application: Early 2023

    Piloting of the show and tailoring if required: May 2023

    Deadline for submitting risk assessment: 22nd May 2023

    Activity Deliverer (South Wales) - Job Advertisement

    The Engineering Education Scheme Wales Ltd is currently seeking an Activity Deliverer, who will work under the supervision of the Activity Manager and liaise with the Chief Executive Officer to deliver exciting and motivating STEM activities in schools for the STEMCymru II operation, initially on a fixed term contract from November 2022 to 31st March 2023. There is the possibility of an extension to June 2023, depending on available funding.

    As an Activity Deliverer, you will be responsible for delivering various STEM activities in schools, with a particular focus on our F1 in Schools activity. You will deliver sessions to groups of pupils within their schools, as well as assisting the Activity Manager and other deliverers with the development of new STEM activities to be delivered across Wales.

    The Engineering Education Scheme Wales Ltd is currently seeking a North Wales Area Co-Ordinator & Activity Deliverer, who will work under the supervision of the Chief Executive Officer and Activity Manager to coordinate and deliver STEM Cymru2 activities and to set up and maintain EESW 6th Form Projects in the North Wales region.

    This is initially a fixed term contract until 31st March 2023 (likely extension to June 2023 and beyond depending on funding). 

    As the North Wales Co-Ordinator, you will ensure the North Wales region has adequate links between schools and companies and maintain support for the partnerships and proactively seek growth opportunities for the Charity and identify funding streams.
