Little Event 2019

Click here to book the Little Event

Thursday, 24th January, 10am - 4:30pm

Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum

The Little Event is BIG’s one-day training session for people who are new to STEM communication, whether you work in a science centre or museum, volunteer for a festival, are involved in university outreach, or do anything else to engage people with science, technology, engineering and maths. The day is crammed with introductory sessions focusing on developing the different skills that are useful in STEM communication; they are delivered by experienced science communicators following BIG's usual hands-on approach.

But of course, it isn't just about the sessions, it’s the people you meet there, too. The Little Event also presents a great opportunity to meet people from across the UK working in similar roles and sharing similar experiences. The programme for the day includes sessions on Networking, Managing Projects, Presenting, Audience analysis and Careers.

The Little Event takes place in early January and costs £45 for BIG members. If you are not a member, you need to join BIG to attend the Little Event and the cost for this is £30. Join BIG now

Setting the scene - Paolo Arru, BIG and SMASHfestUK
Introducing everybody to everybody, plan for the day and a whistle-stop tour of STEM engagement.

Networking- Rachel Mason, science made simple
Everyone knows that networking is a great skill, but it can be daunting when faced with a room of strangers. Join sms to pick up some useful tips and tricks and to practice your networking skills.

Managing projects and events - Hana Ayoob, Freelance Events Curator; Paolo Arru, SMASHfestUK;
From small events like 30-minute demo shows and table top interactives to workshops and science festivals, managing a project is just as important as creating its content.

Presenting science - Jon Wood, JonWoodScience
You know the science but how can you make it accessible to others? A chance to develop your presenting skills.

Careers - Paolo Arru, Jon Wood, Rachel Mason; Katherine Mathieson, Hana Ayoob, and others
Some career options, where to look for jobs, and what qualifications are desirable. Hear from the panel and ask your questions, too.

Who is the audience? - Katherine Mathieson, Chief Executive, British Science Association
What is an audience? How much can audiences differ? Why does your audience even matter?

#BrumSciComm Socia
Once a month, a group of Birmingham-ish based science communicators get together at various places around the region, often in Birmingham city centre. It is not unusual for people to try out new demonstrations, to seek career advice or find themselves planning work with new people. There are no guest speakers and it's all very informal.

As luck would have it, there will be a #BrumSciComm Social on the same day as the Little Event! All are invited to join and the venue is only two minutes from New Street Station, convenient for trains home.

Who: #BrumSciComm
Where: Cherry Reds Cafe Bar, John Bright Street
When: 24 January 2019 from 5:00pm
