    Job Description

    Summary-A fantastic opportunity has arisen for the right individual to gain invaluable experience working for a leading Education Company with an excellent reputation. Learn by Design (LBD) are actively recruiting a full time Education Communicator to begin as soon as possible (note we may have several positions available). The role primarily involves delivering bespoke/corporate workshops to school pupils, of a variety of ages (mainly KS3 pupils), at schools across the country. Our unique approach to inspiring learners makes use of exciting equipment, technology and various props to ensure a quality learning experience for young people, ensuring LBD is a highly respected and innovative education facilitator.

    Typical Day of an Education Communicator-As this isn’t a typical office job, or a typical job at all, every day you work for LBD is going to be different, exciting and challenging. We work in schools across the Country. On a typical day, you can expect to meet at our central vehicle depot, (based just outside, Ilkeston), at an agreed time to meet the team leader for the day. The team travel together to the school in order to set up before the school day begins. Our day then follows the school’s timetable. Once the workshops have been delivered the team returns to the vehicle depot together or travel on to the next location. This is a fantastic opportunity to travel the country and explore areas you may not have seen before!

    During quieter periods of delivery, such as school holidays, you will be expected to work out of our central office in Tamworth, where you will support the LBD team in creating new workshop content, maintaining equipment and helping with all other work tasks as identified by your line manager.

    What do we Deliver? -LBD delivers a selection of quality workshops varying from corporate sponsored days to our own bespoke workshops, to a wide range of age groups. We aim to use specialist and engaging equipment to separate ourselves from our competitors and encourage a memorable learning environment. Key topics within our workshops include STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), Enterprise, Careers and Employability Skills, Performing Arts and key/core skills, such as Resilience, Goal Setting and Communication skills.

    Experience and Requirements-We are looking for confident and flexible individuals to complement our lively team. Experience working in a classroom environment or working with young people preferable, but not essential as full training will be provided for the right individual. Knowledge of STEM, Employability, Enterprise and resilience subjects is preferred, but not essential. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are a must, along with a full UK driving licence and good teamwork skills. We will also require an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check to be carried out.

    Hours of Work-Given the nature of the service that we provide, the hours you work will vary from day to day. Early morning starts and regular overnight stays should be expected.

    Pay and Remuneration

    You will be starting on a salary of £20,250, paid monthly in arrears, with a 12-month probationary period. You will receive a holiday entitlement of 25 days per annum, if full year worked and all statutory bank holidays. (Please note holiday must be taken at a time of year which suits business needs, although we will always work with employees to ensure they can take leave on their desired dates).

    Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium (WSC) is an independent educational charity dedicated to sparking curiosity and building science capital for all. Boasting two floors of hands-on interactive exhibits, the UK’s largest standalone planetarium and a wide-ranging events programme, the Science Centre is an important regional hub for informal science learning and a popular visitor attraction for families, schools and the general public.  WSC has recently been successful in raising funds to redevelop the visitor experience to include a new exhibition, live science demonstration area, invention studio, sensory space and reimagined welcome area. WSC is on a mission to make STEM accessible to all and the upcoming project is a major milestone in the strategic direction of the charity.


    Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium is situated on the outskirts of Winchester within the South Downs National Park.     2.     The Role

    We are currently seeking a Head of Curiosity to be responsible for all public facing STEM activities delivered at our Science Centre in Winchester and the role exists to deliver the charity’s core aim of sparking curiosity and building science capital for all. The Head of Curiosity will curate, develop, deliver and evaluate STEM engagement for all visitors to the centre, by collaborating with key STEM partners, ensuring the Centre is a national beacon of best practice throughout the science communication sector.  


    The Head of Curiosity drives excellence within the organisation, bringing quality, awe and innovation to the visitor experience. This includes a diverse range of inspiring activities and events designed to entice intrigue in science participation across different audiences such as schools, youth groups, families, adults and more.


    The Head of Curiosity will be instrumental in working with external contractors on exhibition design and interactivity through their extensive subject knowledge. The post-holder will also work with our Innovation Officer to develop partnerships with external contributors such as universities.


    The Head of Curiosity will work in collaboration with the Head of Widening Participation to engage with underrepresented audiences and will work with the Fundraising team to ensure impact evidence is best used to raise future funds and demonstrate the charitable value of the Centre.  


    The post-holder will liaise closely with external partners across the international community to share expertise and resources, further establishing the organisation as a leader in public engagement and raising Science Capital.


    The post-holder will be a role model to the wider STEM team, responsible for driving forward a diverse and talented team of Curiosity Officers and Inspirers who deliver the content curated by the Head of Curiosity.     ·         To be responsible for all aspects of a remarkable public engagement programme for families, schools, youth groups and adults

    STARS CDT management is based at Lancaster Environment Centre which is the preferred site for the fellow, although it may be possible to be based with another STARS consortium member.  Responsible to the STARS Director, you will work largely independently identifying and developing legacy ideas and materials based on previous workshop outputs and discussions with the STARS Management Board, supervisors, students and stakeholders.       1. The Role

      Winchester Science Centre is run by an educational charity, with a mission to 'build science capital for all'. Our aim is to spark curiosity about science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). We encourage all young people from all backgrounds to have the aspiration, knowledge and skills to progress into STEM-related careers, creating a better equipped and informed society. 

      Launching in 2019, a major new project will transform Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium into a national beacon for accessibility in STEM, creating an organisation that will be the benchmark science centre for working with visitors of all ability and showing how STEM can help improve the lives of everyone.

      Seven priority areas have been identified, with an initial focus on the Isle of Wight. In 2019 we plan to deliver the Noel Turner Physics Festival, with the intention to grow our presence on the island to reach families, schools and communities throughout the following year.

      1. Job Description

      Purpose of the job:

      Widening participation is central to the mission of Winchester Science Centre. This is a key role in the Widening Participation team, helping to meet our strategic aims by delivering our outreach programme in schools, organising community events and working with the Curiosity team to ensure the internal offer is fully accessible. The successful candidate will be an advocate for accessibility and will work closely with the wider Curiosity team to ensure a joined up approach between our in-house schools and public offer and widening participation events.

      Duties of the post:

    • ·         Be the driving force to deliver an outstanding Noel Turner Science Festival on the Isle of Wight (February 2020) with the support and direction of the steering group. This duty includes logistical organisation, transport organisation and scheduling, school liaison and scheduling, exhibitor booking and all operational aspects.
    • ·         Deliver exemplary workshops to priority/SEN schools visiting the Science Centre, deliver inspiring outreach in priority/SEN schools and support the Curiosity team in delivery of workshops on an ad hoc basis.
    • ·         Plan and deliver inspirational community engagement events such as ‘pop up science centres’ in shopping centres and at local events.
    • ·         Produce exceptional accessible educational materials to support delivery across all teams.

      This list of responsibilities is not exhaustive, and you may be required to perform duties outside of this as operationally required.


      2.    Fee and expenses

      The fee for these services is £6000 per annum divided into twelve equal instalments. The fee will increase annually in line with inflation (RPI). The Membership Services Manager will invoice on a monthly basis and be sent to BIG’s Honorary Treasurer for approval in writing before payment. 

      You shall have the status of a self-employed person and shall not be entitled to any pension, holiday pay, sick pay, redundancy pay or any other fringe benefits from BIG STEM Communicators’ Network. In accordance with this you shall be wholly responsible for all taxes, National Insurance or similar contributions, which may be payable out of, or in respect of, any fees or monies connected to this agreement.

      While delivering these services for BIG STEM Communicators’ Network, you are entitled to the following expenses (in line with our Expenses policy)

      ·     Travel to and from Executive Committee meetings

      ·     Travel to and from events run by BIG

      ·     Travel to and from events where you are representing BIG

      ·     Accommodation related to BIG’s events

      ·      Subsistence (to be agreed upon for each event or activity)

      ·     Stationery and postage related to BIG’s activities

      We expect other reasonable expenses to be covered by yourselves. Any expenses that become unreasonable to you should be discussed with the BIG’s Executive Committee to see if they can be added to the list above.

      Payments for your expenses can be paid using the BIG bank account or debit card. Any expenses paid back to you personally will be reimbursed on presentation of a completed expenses form and relevant receipts and need to be approved in writing by BIG’s Honorary Treasurer. 

      3.    General information

      We expect you to use some of your own equipment (e.g. laptop computers) for the role but at your own responsibility and risk.

      During the course of your contract you will be party to information concerning BIG STEM Communicators’ Network, its activities and partners. Such information is to be regarded as strictly confidential.

      We also expect you to comply with legal requirements associated with delivering the work. This includes, but is not limited to, data protection, insurance, liability and defamation.We expect you to have professional indemnity insurance and business use cover for the use of your car (if you intend to use your own car for BIG business).

      Early termination of the contract by either the contractor or the freelancer will be negotiated between BIG STEM Communicators Network and the Membership Services Manager to ensure the work detailed in this agreement can still be delivered to a satisfactory standard. Any such termination must be communicated in writing and it is agreed that BIG STEM Communicators’ Network will pay for any outstanding work completed as per the termination agreement upon receipt of an invoice. Termination by either party can be for any reason.

    We The Curious is looking for a Content Developer to work on a major new exhibition experience and to contribute to the development and interpretation of new interactive exhibits, displays and artworks being explored by the projects team. With initial exhibit concepts already developed, the Content Developer will conduct further research to refine and work up these ideas, check accuracy with external partners, source and licence images and objects and develop interpretation that will be part of the new exhibition. Whilst comfortable working independently, the successful candidate will also be experienced in developing external relationships and working collaboratively with colleagues, subject matter experts, artists or community groups. They will have a working understanding of the differing personal, social and intellectual needs of audiences and an ability to tailor experiences accordingly

    We The Curious is looking for a Content Researcher to work on a major new exhibition experience, contributing to the research and prototyping of new interactive exhibits, displays and artworks being explored by the projects team. With initial exhibit concepts already developed, the Content Researcher will conduct further research to provide background information, assess accuracy and use their findings to support interpretation and prototyping of potential exhibits. You’ll have experience of research, both within and outside your area of training, and experience of working with collaborators as well as experience of developing content for public facing output.
