  • Post Title:                   STEM Engagement Coordinator

    Contract:                     Fixed term until 31 March 2020 (with view to extend subject to external contract renewal)

    Work pattern:             The suggested working hours are 0900 – 1500, Monday to Friday (27.5 hours per week with 30 minutes lunch break). However, we are keen to support flexible working patterns and this can be discussed at interview stage. Occasional evening and weekend working for which TOIL will be given.

    Salary:                         £21,000 - £22,500 per annum, pro rata depending on experience (e.g. if working 27.5 hours per week, the pro-rata salary would be £15,400 – £16,500 per annum). 

    Line Manager:            STEM Engagement Manager

    Holiday:                      20 days per year plus bank holidays (pro-rata dependant on agreed working hours)

    1.    The Organisation

    Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium, located close to Winchester and the M3 Motorway in Hampshire, is a leading hands-on science and discovery centre dedicated to engaging, enthusing and inspiring people about science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The independent educational charity, which runs Winchester Science Centre, was formed in 1985 as a strategic initiative with local government and businesses, to address the shortage of young people entering technical careers at both the regional and national level.

    The STEM NOW team at Winchester Science Centre provides science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) engagement provision for education and STEM industry sector. We deliver a variety of national contracts and regional project, to inspire young people to consider a future in the STEM industry. The STEM NOW Team deliver the contract for the STEM Ambassadors Programme in Central South England, the contract for Regional CREST Support Organisation in the Midlands, Hertfordshire, Essex, Berkshire and Hampshire and deliver a range bespoke STEM events for all our stakeholders (such as Big Bang @ Winchester Science Centre, National Women in Engineering Day, CPD sessions and networking sessions).

    2.    The Role

    The STEM Engagement Coordinator role has three key strands:

    ·         To communicate with STEM Ambassadors to support them to become and remain programme ready.

    ·         To work with the STEM NOW team to deliver activities and events with young people and role models.

    ·         To coordinate STEM based projects as required e.g. the Nuffield Research Placement contract.

    Flexibility is essential as the STEM NOW Team at Winchester Science Centre relies on a small team of dedicated individuals working closely together to support and develop the charity, so occasional additional support duties will be required in other areas of its business.

    Duties will include:

    ·         Act as a point of contact for volunteers, schools and industry and coordinate volunteering opportunities

    ·         Administrative, data inputting & telephone support for the wider STEM NOW team and to ensure STEM Ambassadors are programme ready

    ·         Achieve personal targets to support delivery of the wider organisations KPIs

    ·         Support the coordination and delivery of internal and external events

    ·         Representing the charity with partners, stakeholders and funders

    ·         Coordinate STEM based projects, such as the Nuffield Research Placements and CREST Awards, to ensure successful contract delivery

    ·         Coordinate the content for digital communications to support contract requirements

    ·         To undertake other tasks as reasonably arise within the remit of Head of STEM Engagement, to include all levels of work within this team. The above should not be considered an exhaustive list.

    3.    Person Specification

    a. Qualifications

    E – Qualified with at least 5 A-C GCSE’s, or equivalent

    b. Preferred knowledge and experience

    E - Experience of working effectively in a team

    E - Experience of taking initiative and being self-motivated

    E - Experience of prioritising work, multitasking and managing time well

    E - Communicating effectively with different stakeholders

    D - Understanding of STEM opportunities in industry and academia

    E - Previous experience of working in an administration role

    E- Excellent computer skills including database management

    E- Good time management

    E- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

    d. Personal qualities and skills

    E - Excellent communication skills – strong networking skills, clear written communication

    E - Enthusiasm for STEM subjects
