    The Impact Team at Northumbria University (in Newcastle, UK) is recruiting a permanent Impact and Engagement Officer to work with researchers at the university to maximise the impact of their research by helping them engage and communicate with external stakeholders. 

    Location: A blend of remote working with some on-campus engagements in Newcastle

    Salary: £36,382 - £40,927

    The Impact and Engagement Officer will work proactively and in partnership with professional and academic colleagues to catalyse, stimulate and support impact activities, including increased public and policy engagement, impact integration and evaluation in grant applications and funded projects, and impact into teaching/education – thereby maximising the impact of Northumbria University's research.

    The role holder will have a thorough knowledge of research impact within funding and assessment exercises and will use this to develop and deliver training, provide one-to-one support and proactively identify opportunities. The post will support Northumbria's impact culture, assisting academics to extend the reach and significance of their impact through activities such as knowledge mobilisation and exchange, IP, commercialisation, and other relevant mechanisms.

    As a member of the Impact Team, you will make a significant contribution to future research assessment exercises and manage a portfolio of impact case studies, working with senior department and faculty colleagues to proactively plan and support their development.

    The post holder will also be required to professionally engage with external stakeholders and develop and maintain their own networks for impact development, including local, regional, and national networks for policy and public engagement.

    You will have: 

    • A strong understanding of research impact in its widest context
    • Knowledge of research management in HE, including an excellent understanding of impact requirements in research assessment (REF).
    • Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with academic and professional colleagues, and external stakeholders, with credibility to engage and influence.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex, highly detailed, technical or specialist information, including experience of writing for different audiences and different media.

    In June 2022, the Institute of Physics (IOP) will be opening a new public-facing exhibition at 37 Caledonian Road, its London building in Kings Cross. The exhibition is aimed at young people aged 7-9, and their families, and will be in support of the IOP’s Limit Less campaign that aims to increase the number of underrepresented young people doing physics post-16. 

     

    When creating this exhibition, we ask the question: how can we celebrate the contributions that are being made by physicists in the UK and Ireland to address the extraordinary challenges we are facing as society, a species and a planet? The 2022 Family Exhibition will explore this idea – shining a light on the physicists who are working to create a safer, more sustainable and healthier world and inspiring young people and their families to think about their future and the role they want to play in shaping it. Ultimately, the key message will be in line with the Limit Less campaign – do physics after 16 to change the world. 

     

    A vital part of this exhibition will be an exciting selection of interactive exhibits and activities; we want visitors to be able to step into a physicist’s shoes and try out activities inspired by real life science, and be inspired in turn. To deliver the exhibition, the IOP is seeking to appoint a freelance Exhibit Developer to support the London-based Public Engagement Team by contributing to the development, design, procurement and delivery of key elements of the exhibition.

    Are you a talented science communicator who shares our passion for using scientific evidence to benefit the lives of animals? Can you help us improve the way we disseminate knowledge about animal welfare to a wide range of audiences?

    The Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) and the Humane Slaughter Association (HSA) are two sister charities focussed on the promotion of scientific, evidence-based approaches to animal welfare. We fund research, support the animal welfare science community and advocate for evidence-based improvements to animal welfare worldwide.

    Communicating animal welfare science to both specialist audiences and the wider public is key to turning science into real-world improvements in animal welfare. Both charities are looking to improve the way they translate animal welfare science information into effective communications aimed at various audiences.

    You will have a comprehensive scientific knowledge (likely including a degree or postgraduate qualification in a biological science or veterinary medicine) and be a natural and experienced communicator. The ideal candidate will have a portfolio of science communication work through which they can demonstrate their skills.

    The postholder will work closely with our internal scientific and technical staff as well as the scientists and experts we work with to produce communications using multiple channels including web, e-learning resources, print, social media, video etc. You should also have experience of promoting news-worthy stories to the media through press-releases and other routes. Experience of graphic design, infographic production and video editing would be advantageous.

    This position can be office-based, or predominantly home-based: however, the postholder will be expected to attend some meetings at our offices in Hertfordshire and to undertake travel within the UK and possibly overseas. Because we’re based in the UK, the appointee will need to be UK-based and legally entitled to work in the UK.

    The candidate must be comfortable with the charities’ approach to animal welfare which includes co-operation with industries which use animals, including the livestock and slaughter industries. Whilst both charities promote the highest standards of animal welfare, they do not oppose the use of animals per se.

    We are seeking an outstanding postdoctoral researcher with excellent skills in qualitative research methods to join us working on a research programme funded by NIHR.

    You will be contributing to a research programme called “Transforming outpatient consultations by integrating regular symptom tracking into clinical care: the Remote Monitoring of Rheumatoid Arthritis (REMORA2) study”. The REMORA2 programme is funded by NIHR as part of their Programme Grants for Applied Research scheme and will take four years in total, with a stop-go decision at two years.

    REMORA2 builds on previous studies conducted by the research team that demonstrated the feasiblity and acceptability of daily smartphone-based symptom tracking in people living with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), with symptom data integrated into the electronic health record. The current programme aims to deliver robust evidence for the positive effect of this integrated symptom tracking on health outcomes.

    The Engineering Education Scheme Wales Ltd is currently seeking a South Wales Activity Deliverer, who will work under the supervision of the Activity Manager and Chief Operating Officer to develop activities for the STEMCymru II Project and deliver exciting and motivating STEM activities in schools.

     

    This is initially a fixed term contract until 31st March 2022 (with the possibility of extension to June 2023 depending on funding).

     

    As an Activity Deliverer, you will be responsible for delivering various STEM activities in schools.  You will deliver sessions to groups of pupils within their schools, as well as assisting the Activity Manager and other deliverers with the development of new STEM activities to be delivered across Wales.

    Started by Michael Faraday in 1825, and broadcast on national television every year, the CHRISTMAS LECTURES are the UK's flagship science series. The three-part series is filmed in front of a live audience in the Ri’s famous lecture theatre and watched by millions on the BBC over the festive period and on BBC iPlayer and the Ri YouTube channel afterwards.

     

    The Science Content Assistant will be a key part of the delivery team for the lectures and will assist with the creation development and implementation of the 2021 CHRISTMAS LECTURES and the linked schools resources.

     

    Do you have: 

    • Experience working on projects with multiple stakeholders and tight budgets, to a rigid timetable.
    • Experience of sourcing, developing, and building demonstrations and/or props.
    • Experience working in a TV studio or theatre environment.
    • An interest in the history and development of scientific demonstrations.
    • Experience in using power tools.

    Purpose of the post

    Planning and organising

    This post is part of a busy team that delivers effective communications for this national institute.  The Communications Manager, Science will be responsible for planning activity, aligned to the communications strategy, that meets the demands of Health Data Research UK.  This will require exceptional organisational skills, managing multiple projects at one time, to ensure work is delivered within deadline and to budget.  At the same time, the post holder will require a flexible approach to work to changing demands.

     

    Problem solving

    The Communications Manager, Science will be expected to use problem solving skills to respond to and manage the diverse demands on the team.   The post holder will operate with significant independence, dealing with and responding to issues brought to their attention as a first point of contact for the communications team.   The post holder will deputise for the Head of Communications, therefore will require confidence in dealing with enquiries, problem solving and decision making.  The post holder will make an effective judgement on when to escalate issues to senior colleagues’ attention and with what urgency.

     

    Decision making

    The post-holder will make all day-to-day operational decisions for their own workload and on behalf of Health Data Research UK, where required.  With support from senior colleagues, the Communications Manager will identify, initiate and develop opportunities for collaborative working with relevant national and international partners and organisations.

    The post holder will build and maintain effective working relationships both within HDR UK, with partners in substantive site and with other key stakeholders.  The Communications Manager will have close working relationships with members of the Executive Committee, in particular the Chief Science Strategy Officer and Director.

    Dimensions
