    The Cambridge Festival shares the research of the University of Cambridge with the public. Now in our fourth year, we are looking for someone with a passion for public engagement and events to help plan and deliver the next Festival, which will take place in March 2024.

    The role-holder will take responsibility to develop and deliver our schools and family programme for the Festival, alongside supporting our year-round University-wide activities. This is an exciting chance to engage with people both locally, globally, develop new activity strands, and support researchers across the University to engage.

    They will also build and manage working relationships with key public engagement and informal educational providers, both internal and external to the University, providing information, advice and training where appropriate.

    The role holder will also lead on coordinating our volunteer programme that supports our festival event delivery.

    On an ongoing basis, they will support the Festival Manager to deliver the Cambridge Festival, including the development of festival strategy, logistics, evaluation and health and safety protocols.

    The role is located in the central Public Engagement Team, part of the Office of External Affairs and Communications at the University of Cambridge.

    About Us

    Centre of the Cell www.centreofthecell.org is an award-winning, informal biomedical science learning centre, based in the Blizard Institute at Queen Mary University of London.

    With its two iconic learning spaces, Centre of the Cell aims to inspire young people with an immersive digital interactive experience in STEMPod and through engaging science shows and workshops in Neuron Pod. We also deliver outreach programmes and events in schools and to community groups.

    In addition to this, Centre of the Cell has a Youth Membership Scheme with over 400 members and provides summer schools, volunteering and work experience opportunities, mentoring, help with university applications and co-production of the Big Question Lecture series.

    This is an exciting time for Centre of the Cell. We have just completed a £438,000 refurbishment of STEMPod with state-of-the-art computer and film technology and a refresh of activities and film to reflect the latest in biomedical research at Queen Mary University of London. There is also funding secured for a series of new interactives, shows and workshops to be developed and delivered in 2023-24.

    About The Role

    To support the next stages of our development plans, we are looking to appoint an Operations Manager.

    Working closely with the Director and Founder of Centre of the Cell, you will develop and implement strategic plans, including marketing and visitor experience, to support the growth and long-term future of Centre of the Cell and its offerings.

    This critical role will provide you with the opportunity to manage the full operational delivery of Centre of the Cell, including managing a small team of delivery staff, overseeing public engagement projects, and day to day finance, HR, and infrastructure tasks.

    About You

    Due to the current requirements of the role, on this occasion we are looking for an individual who has a background in working in a similar environment to ours (e.g museums, visitor attractions, heritage/science centres).

    You will currently be working (or previously worked) at a similar level and see our role as an opportunity to transfer your existing skills and experiences and add to your career portfolio, or you might see this as an exciting opportunity and new challenge to help shape our future delivery.

    Alternatively, you will be (or have been) part of a large operational team (in a deputy capacity) with similar, specific responsibilities to those set out and see our role as your opportunity to now have overall accountability and ownership for delivery whilst working at a higher level.

    The Royal Institution (Ri) is an independent charity providing science education and heritage activities for people of all ages and backgrounds across the UK and around the world. These include the world-famous CHRISTMAS LECTURES,  a national programme of Masterclasses for young people in mathematics and computer science, science workshops in our L’Oréal Young Scientist Centre, and animations and films from our YouTube channel.

    We are now looking for a Science in Schools Presenter who can deliver engaging science shows to children in primary and secondary schools across the UK, and who is confident in sharing their knowledge with teachers and school staff.  

     

    If successful, you will be delivering our popular science shows and professional development training sessions in schools in London and the surrounding counties. We will provide you with the scripts, the props, the training, and the bookings… all you need to focus on is delivering amazing shows that engage and enthral our audiences with the wonders of science. 

     

    We are looking for candidates who: 

    • Have experience in presenting educational content (not necessarily science-based) to children and adults with the ability to engage and excite audiences of all ages.
    • Are skilled performers with the confidence and ability to learn new content quickly and present to live audiences.  
    • Can act as an ambassador for the Royal Institution.  
    • Are committed to delivering exciting shows that keep everyone’s Health and Safety front and centre.  
    • A full driving licence and access to a vehicle  (mileage will be paid).

    Summer Science Exhibition Volunteers


    The Royal Society is looking for reliable and highly motivated volunteers to be part of the 2023 Summer Science Exhibition, taking place on 4 – 9 July 2023 in London.

     

    The Summer Science Exhibition is the Society’s flagship event, attracting thousands of visitors over the course of 6 days. This year it is coming back to London with nine flagship exhibits and many more interactive activities, talks and workshops for families. It showcases the most exciting cutting-edge science and technology research from across the UK and provides a unique opportunity for members of the public to chat to scientists and ask them questions about their work.

     

    With so much going on, we rely on our dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to ensure the success of this event. We are looking for people who are happy to engage in a wide variety of tasks, have good team working skills, are comfortable talking to the public, have an interest in science and, above all, are enthusiastic. The exhibition takes place 4 – 9 July. Working hours are flexible although we would usually expect volunteers to commit to at least 8 - 12 hours across one or more days of the exhibition. Although this volunteering opportunity offers ideal experience for someone looking to get involved in science public engagement or events management, we are also keen to hear from those who are simply passionate about science.

    Tasks during the exhibition will include:

    • Interacting with the public, greeting visitors and responding to queries
    • Briefing school groups and teachers visiting the exhibition
    • Staffing the information desk
    • Acting as human signposts outside the buildings and assisting with queue management at busy times
    • Supporting feedback of the event through observations and data reporting
    • Administrative tasks including evaluation and monitoring emails.

     

    Volunteers will be given a full day of training prior to the exhibition, scheduled for Monday 19 June 2023 (TBC) at the Royal Society in London.

     

    We will cover travel expenses and provide meals and refreshments during exhibition opening times. Volunteers must be aged 18 or over and no longer in full time secondary education.

With the future looking bright we are looking to employ a new manager to take the business of the Kirkcudbright Dark Space Planetarium forward. 

    The purpose of the role is to manage Kirkcudbright Dark Space Planetarium’s existing business activities including centre operations and event programming, as well as strategic planning. The role will require maintaining and increasing the efficiencies and success of the charitable organisation by coordinating business operations, programme development and delivery, communications and event management, monitoring and motivating centre staff, managing operational costs and contracts, fundraising, improving administration processes, and engaging and developing relationships with partners, stakeholders, and the community.

    The Family Programme is core to how we, at the Ri, engage the general public with science. Based mostly at our offices in central London, this internship will consist of theatre talks, interactive workshops and hands-on open days. Your main role will be to assist the Family Programmes Manager in the delivery of this programme, developing hands-on activities for science activities and creating short science videos for YouTube and TikTok. 

    The Royal Institution’s (Ri) ‘Science in Schools’ programme offers a unique package of science shows for students, Continuing Professional Development for teachers, and community science shows for families. We are the largest national provider of science shows delivered in schools in the UK, and in 2022, 76% of our shows were delivered to schools in the most deprived areas of the UK, free of charge.

    The Role:

    The STEM programme is delivered through practical hands on workshops, family events and teacher training within four key themes: Aerospace, Green Energy, Environmental Science, and Sustainable Design, these themes make the most of the existing expertise in the wider Prince’s Foundation, as well as the local STEM employment opportunities and expertise.

    Due to themes and existing expertise on the estate a candidate with a background in physics, engineering or digital technologies would be at an advantage. The candidate should however be comfortable teaching STEM subjects out with their area of expertise to a primary and secondary school level, with support from the wider Education team and industry experts.

    The wider education programme on Dumfries House Estate is delivered across themes including: STEM; Food, Farming and Horticulture; Outdoor Activity; Hospitality; Textiles and Building Crafts. Due to the holistic nature of the programme, the post holder will be required to assist in these areas from time to time, take part in CPD in these areas and work with colleagues across the education team on cross curricular education projects.

    The post holder will assist in the development and implementation of workshops, industry training programmes, short courses and project related education activity including large scale events and cross curricular delivery. The post holder will also prepare and deliver classes across a range of ages as well as maintaining stakeholder relationships with industry and education partners.

    Key Tasks

    Specific Duties will include:

    Supporting the Education Director and Curriculum Manager to ensure the smooth delivery of the Prince’s Foundation’s education strategy and core STEM programmes, a responsibility which will include:

    o Designing, supporting and delivering STEM workshops activities to a primary and secondary audience in line with The Curriculum For Excellence, Learning for Sustainability, STEM education strategy and the Principles of Harmony.

    o Participate in evaluation and review of workshops and education activities in a timely manner and contribute to education reports for directors, partners and funders.

    o Ensure education activities are suitable for learners by writing, reviewing, updating and following risk assessments, as well as following health and safety procedures for first aid and incident reporting.

    o Keeping up to date with current practices and policies in STEM education, through networking, CPD and personal development.

    o Supporting the development of strong relationships with industry and education partners such as STEM industry funders and partners, STEM Education organisations and charities and local authority and Scottish Education representatives. Work with these partners to enhance the STEM offer at Dumfries House through co delivery and design of workshops and activities.

    o Preparing, and maintaining equipment and facilities to a high standard prior to and following education activity, monitor and request stock as appropriate.

    o Further the wider education work of The Prince’s Foundation through contribution to team meetings, joint education activity and events and cross curricular CPD sessions

    o Support the STEM manager to ensure that the maintenance of the STEM building(s) is completed, informing relevant Prince’s Foundation staff when maintenance is required.

    o Maintain familiarity with The Prince’s Foundation handbook and relevant HR procedures.

    o Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required of you in the post.

    It is in the nature of the work of the Prince's Foundation that tasks and responsibilities are, in many circumstances, unpredictable and varied. All staff are therefore expected to work in a flexible way when the occasion arises that tasks which are not specifically covered in their Job Description must be undertaken.

    Person Specification

    The essential skills, knowledge and experience required are:

    o The successful candidate should have recent and relevant STEM industry or STEM education experience or be educated to degree level in a relevant STEM subject.

    o The post holder should be able to demonstrate prior experience educating and engaging with young people or community groups through STEM activities.

    o Able to develop and implement STEM learning resources linked into curriculum themes.

    o Able to represent the Prince’s Foundation professionally at all times.

    o Excellent interpersonal skills; planning, setting agendas, coordinating/conducting meetings, events, and workshops.

    o Excellent communication and presentation skills.

    o Strong organisation skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

    o Ability to work proactively and flexibly under pressure and to achieve set objectives.

    o The ability to work within a team, maintaining positive relationships with the wider education team.

    o Ability to create high quality presentations/visual aids. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (e.g. PowerPoint, Excel and Word), Windows, Adobe.

    o Some travel within the UK and occasionally overseas may be necessary.

    o Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.


    Desirable skills, knowledge and experience required are:

    o Knowledge of the future UK wide STEM skills shortage, growth industries and how this impacts employers and future employees.

    o Knowledge of the education and training environment in relationship to schools and further education.

    o Awareness of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and how these relate to industry and education.

    o The post will be based at Dumfries House, Cumnock Ayrshire with the requirement to travel on occasion. A driving license is required for this post.

    o This post is based on a full time 37.5 hours per week linked to the target audience needs. Job share and/or flexible working may be considered for suitable candidates.

    We are excited to invite applications for a 14 month fixed-term maternity cover for Public Engagement Officer at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh. This role is an opportunity for someone with a keen interest in engaging diverse audiences with science and technology to join our small team. Two key growth areas for us over the coming year are community partnerships and teacher support. We would be really excited to see applications from individuals with experience in either or both of these areas.

     

    The public engagement team at ROE deliver a vibrant programme of activities both at the observatory and across the city. We aim to share the wonder of the cutting-edge science and technology carried out by STFC with as wide an audience as possible, giving particular focus to reaching groups who are currently underserved and underrepresented within STEM.

     

    ROE is at the forefront of astronomical research and technology and hosts nearly 240 staff and students. It encompasses two organisations; the UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC), one of four national labs of STFC, and Edinburgh University’s Institute for Astronomy (IfA) and we work closely with this expertise to define and deliver our programme.
