    We are seeking an outstanding postdoctoral researcher with excellent skills in qualitative research methods to join us working on a research programme funded by NIHR.

    You will be contributing to a research programme called “Transforming outpatient consultations by integrating regular symptom tracking into clinical care: the Remote Monitoring of Rheumatoid Arthritis (REMORA2) study”. The REMORA2 programme is funded by NIHR as part of their Programme Grants for Applied Research scheme and will take four years in total, with a stop-go decision at two years.

    REMORA2 builds on previous studies conducted by the research team that demonstrated the feasiblity and acceptability of daily smartphone-based symptom tracking in people living with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), with symptom data integrated into the electronic health record. The current programme aims to deliver robust evidence for the positive effect of this integrated symptom tracking on health outcomes.

    The Engineering Education Scheme Wales Ltd is currently seeking a South Wales Activity Deliverer, who will work under the supervision of the Activity Manager and Chief Operating Officer to develop activities for the STEMCymru II Project and deliver exciting and motivating STEM activities in schools.

     

    This is initially a fixed term contract until 31st March 2022 (with the possibility of extension to June 2023 depending on funding).

     

    As an Activity Deliverer, you will be responsible for delivering various STEM activities in schools.  You will deliver sessions to groups of pupils within their schools, as well as assisting the Activity Manager and other deliverers with the development of new STEM activities to be delivered across Wales.

    Started by Michael Faraday in 1825, and broadcast on national television every year, the CHRISTMAS LECTURES are the UK's flagship science series. The three-part series is filmed in front of a live audience in the Ri’s famous lecture theatre and watched by millions on the BBC over the festive period and on BBC iPlayer and the Ri YouTube channel afterwards.

     

    The Science Content Assistant will be a key part of the delivery team for the lectures and will assist with the creation development and implementation of the 2021 CHRISTMAS LECTURES and the linked schools resources.

     

    Do you have: 

    • Experience working on projects with multiple stakeholders and tight budgets, to a rigid timetable.
    • Experience of sourcing, developing, and building demonstrations and/or props.
    • Experience working in a TV studio or theatre environment.
    • An interest in the history and development of scientific demonstrations.
    • Experience in using power tools.

    Purpose of the post

     

    Reporting to the Head of Communications, this is a pivotal new role that will be integral to demonstrating the value of health data research. You will work hand in hand with the HDR UK research community – many of them key to the scientific response to COVID – to tell the compelling story of data in health research. You will also work with colleagues across HDR UK programmes to pull together the wider narrative of our research impact.

     

    You will deliver the communications strategy for research and science, working with colleagues to manage a range of tools and channels, including our website, social media, email, publications, PR and events, to reach audiences across academia, NHS, industry, charities; as well as  patients and the public. 

    This is a unique and exciting opportunity for an experienced science communications professional to lead and deliver communications on cutting-edge research using health data that are making a tangible difference to people’s lives.

     

    We are seeking an individual with a proven track record in research communications who has successfully worked on complex, scientific projects with multiple partners.     Communications at Health Data Research UK

     

    Our strategy for Insights, Communications and Engagement is a key enabler in supporting HDR UK’s mission to unite the UK’s health data to enable discoveries that improve people’s lives. Our aim is to position HDR UK as a leading international institute for health data research, that has the trust and confidence of patients, public, practitioners and key stakeholders.

     

    Main responsibilities for the role

    • Implement HDR UK’s communication strategy with a specific focus on communicating the scientific and research impact
    • Horizon scan for opportunities to share research impact that help raise the profile of the institute and its research/scientific outputs
    • Produce high quality, engaging research-focused content for the website, social media and other channels
    • Research, write and create engaging scientific content in the form of case studies, news stories, press releases, videos and podcasts
    • Work with the Media and Content Officer to ensure scientific output is in line with wider content strategy (e.g., relevant content is developed for specific audiences and channels)

    Planning and organising

    This post is part of a busy team that delivers effective communications for this national institute.  The Communications Manager, Science will be responsible for planning activity, aligned to the communications strategy, that meets the demands of Health Data Research UK.  This will require exceptional organisational skills, managing multiple projects at one time, to ensure work is delivered within deadline and to budget.  At the same time, the post holder will require a flexible approach to work to changing demands.

     

    Problem solving

    The Communications Manager, Science will be expected to use problem solving skills to respond to and manage the diverse demands on the team.   The post holder will operate with significant independence, dealing with and responding to issues brought to their attention as a first point of contact for the communications team.   The post holder will deputise for the Head of Communications, therefore will require confidence in dealing with enquiries, problem solving and decision making.  The post holder will make an effective judgement on when to escalate issues to senior colleagues’ attention and with what urgency.

     

    Decision making

    The post-holder will make all day-to-day operational decisions for their own workload and on behalf of Health Data Research UK, where required.  With support from senior colleagues, the Communications Manager will identify, initiate and develop opportunities for collaborative working with relevant national and international partners and organisations.

    The post holder will build and maintain effective working relationships both within HDR UK, with partners in substantive site and with other key stakeholders.  The Communications Manager will have close working relationships with members of the Executive Committee, in particular the Chief Science Strategy Officer and Director.

    CURIOSITY OFFICER (SCHOOLS)  

    THE ORGANISATION:  

    Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium is a leading hands-on science and discovery centre dedicated to sparking curiosity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). It attracts more than 172,000 visitors per year from across the South of England and is home to the UK’s largest capacity planetarium. The Centre is an independent educational charity formed in 1985 as a strategic initiative with local government and businesses. Our bespoke educational program, aimed at KS1 to KS3, sparks curiosity and ignites a passion for STEM. We take schools on an adventure through the immersive exhibits, explore the universe in our planetarium and get hands-on in our workshops. Our educational program attracts around 40,000 schoolchildren to the Centre every year.  

    THE ROLE:  

    Winchester Science Centre is dedicated to adding a new and exciting scientific content stream to a schools offer, with a greater emphasis on outdoor learning, ecology, sustainability and environmental sciences. We are seeking an individual with knowledge in this area who also has prior experience of working with schools and groups in this area. Our team of Curiosity Officer’s develop, coordinate, deliver and evaluate our different STEM engagement programs across the charity. The Curiosity Officer (Schools) is primarily dedicated to maintaining our hugely successful Ultimate STEM School Trip, and the future development of a school’s outdoor STEM offer.  

    This is a fantastic and unique opportunity to join a charity with a dedicated, friendly and supportive team, that will  make an important contribution to the future development of this charity. The Curiosity Officer is part of the Curiosity Department, managed by the Head of Curiosity and Planetarium.  

    The Ultimate STEM School Trip  

    Our School Trip is the corner stone of the charity’s public engagement offer. We strive for our offer to be fully  accessible and the successful applicant must be an active advocate for accessibility and always looking to develop engagements with accessibility built in. The successful applicant will maintain this offer to its current high standard, with annual development of content and regular training sessions for our Inspirer Team, to update science content and develop group management skills. The post holder manages and implements day-to-day delivery and budget, supported by the Head of Department.  

    NEW Ultimate Outdoor STEM School Trip  

    Bio:Space is an area we are piloting within the Science Centre, where young people explore our unique environment inside the South Down National Park and take part in hands-on activities about environmental science. As part of our COVID recovery, we wish to diversify our visitor experience outdoors. We plan to curate a unique, exciting and thriving new addition to our school trip offer which will explore the scientific method outside. The successful applicant will develop the offer, with a small team from WSC, which with enlighten young people in environmental science and the climate crisis, encouraging them to become agents of change for a better planet.  

    Other Projects and Activities  

    The post holder will manage, or be part of a team from time to time, who manages other projects that will relate to your role. Previous national projects include ‘Destination Space’ which was a charity wide project which redeveloped a school workshop and is now the most popular workshop; and working with the Curiosity Officer (Public) to develop activities in Bio:Space. We are a small, but growing team therefore, you will be called on to support across the whole STEM offer; which may include Science Festivals, STEM outreach sessions, mobile planetarium, public days at the Science Centre and filming for our digital engagement program.  

    Team Management  

    As experienced members of the team, Curiosity Officers will line manage Inspirers, sessional workers and volunteers as well as working closely with other staff across the charity. You will be required to attend regular team meetings and you will be expected to present reports on the projects you are working on.

    Counterfactual is a venture studio on a mission to help the world's most talented people build venture-scale startups that create a more sustainable, humane, and secure future of food. We synthesize insights across the protein value chain to identify and anticipate high-potential whitespace, then support exceptional scientists, technologists, operators and entrepreneurs (like you?) in building startups around our market and technology bets.     We offer a maximally supportive environment in which to launch a startup, whether you’re transitioning out of academia, industry or are a repeat founder. Through our programme you’ll:

    • Enter a collaborative process with the venture studio to turn one of our high-potential company concepts into a startup you’re uniquely positioned to build. 

    • Be supported in finding your ideal co-founder(s) from our pool of world-class talent.

    • If your team is successful, receive $300K of pre-seed capital and extensive incubation support to accelerate your market and investment readiness, with strong potential for follow-on funding.


    How it works:


    Application

    Our application process is designed to get a sense of your goals and determine what type of company you’re uniquely positioned to build.  If your potential and commitment to the Counterfactual mission checks out, but we are unable to place you with a concept for an upcoming cohort, you’ll be invited to explore future opportunities in our cofounder pool. 


    Formation

    Healthy team dynamics and founder-solution fit are critical to a startup’s success. The goal of formation is to build strong founding teams that are exceptionally well-placed to solve the problem they are working on. You’ll enter a period of co-development and validation with the venture studio based on one of our company concepts. This is also when we help shortlisted candidates match with their co-founder(s).  If your team makes it to the end of formation, we’ll work with you to refine your pitch for the incubator. 


    Incubation

    Following a successful pitch, you and your co-founder(s) enter a tailored incubation programme designed to accelerate your market and investment-readiness. We incubate around 8 companies every six months, providing $300k in pre-seed capital, hands-on mentorship, essential turnkey services and tailored support for you and your team.

    • Accelerate your launch with our support. We offer six months of tailored incubation support, $300,000 pre-seed capital and support from our network to get your startup market- and investment-ready.


    We are looking for:


    • Talented founders from all backgrounds, with the potential to provide commercial and operational leadership for company concepts emerging from the venture studio. 

    • Scientists and technical domain experts with skills and experiences passionate about working with emerging technologies to reimagine food and agriculture. We're particularly interested in engaging those with technical expertise and experience in (not necessarily all) of the following: 

      • PhD or similar level expertise in any one of the following:  

        • Process engineering

        • Manufacturing plant design

        • Industrial engineering

        • Operations research

        • Chemical engineering 

        • Construction or architecture

      • Prior management or set up of a lab, processing facility or plant

      • Familiarity with the needs (& pain points!) of R&D teams. Bonus points if this was in a startup or scale up environment, or for standalone research institutes.

      • Experience in commercial real estate development. Maybe even with a life sciences focus or with experience repurposing spaces for innovation hubs. 

      • Familiarity with lease management and services for commercial real estate, the financial considerations and challenges that come with leasing and services products. 


    • Alternatively, those with a skillset and background in (not necessarily all) of the following: 


    • PhD or similar level expertise in any one of the following:  

      • Precision fermentation

      • Synthetic biology

      • Food science and/or meat science background will be a bonus

      • Protein chemistry

      • Biochemistry

      • Target molecule selection 

    • Prior management or set up of a lab, processing facility or plant, including management of a team in a lab setting

    • Familiarity with the needs (& pain points!) of the alternative protein industry, and its consumers. 

    • Experience founding or working in a start-up or scale up environment


    Additionally, here’s a non-exhaustive list of the other types of experiences that we’re particularly excited about:

    • You have a strong background in any of the following disciplines: 

      • cell agriculture, tissue engineering, synthetic biology, fermentation, biochemistry, food science, food engineering, agricultural engineering,  plant biology, chemical engineering, bioreactor engineering, processing plant design, operations research/industrial engineering, data science, AI/ML.

    • You’ve built something from scratch: you may have been an entrepreneur, intrapreneur or been a key player in the early growth of a startup. 

    • You’ve got strong industry experience in an area connected to food, agriculture, biotech or supply chain & logistics. 

    • You’ve worked on technology commercialisation and can be the bridge between research and the marketplace.

    We have an exciting vacancy for an Impact and Engagement Officer to join our team at Northumbria University. The Impact Team is positioned within Research and Innovation Services.

    As an Impact and Engagement Officer, you will work proactively and in partnership with professional and academic colleagues to catalyse, stimulate and support impact activities, including increased public and policy engagement, impact integration and evaluation in grant applications and funded projects, and impact into teaching/education – thereby maximising the impact of Northumbria University's research.

    The role holder will have a thorough knowledge of research impact within funding and assessment exercises and will use this to develop and deliver training, provide one-to-one support and proactively identify opportunities. The post will support Northumbria's impact culture, assisting academics to extend the reach and significance of their impact through activities such as knowledge mobilisation and exchange, IP, commercialisation, and other relevant mechanisms.

    As a member of the Impact Team, you will make a significant contribution to future research assessment exercises and manage a portfolio of impact case studies, working with senior department and faculty colleagues to proactively plan and support their development.

    The post holder will also be required to engage with external stakeholders professionally and will be expected to develop and maintain their own networks for impact development, including local, regional, and national networks for policy and public engagement.

    You will have: 

    • A strong understanding of research impact in its widest context
    • Knowledge of research management in HE, including an excellent understanding of impact requirements in research assessment (REF).
    • Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with academic and professional colleagues, and external stakeholders, with credibility to engage and influence.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex, highly detailed, technical or specialist information, including experience of writing for different audiences and different media.
