About the role

Calling all Science presenters! Here at the Royal Institution (Ri), we are growing our team of school presenters and are looking for freelancers to join our team. The Ri team of professional presenters have an infectious enthusiasm and love for science that inspires audiences, entertaining and educating in equal measure.

We are looking for presenters who can deliver engaging science shows to children in primary and secondary schools across the UK, and who are confident in sharing their knowledge with teachers and school staff.

If successful, you will be delivering our successful science shows and professional development training sessions in schools across the country. We will provide you with the scripts, the props, the training, and the bookings… all you need to focus on is delivering amazing shows that engage and enthral our audiences with the wonders of science. We are particularly looking for presenters who can work in the Midlands and Northern regions of the UK.

A typical day as a Royal Institution Science in Schools presenter would involve driving to the school, setting up and delivering two one-hour long student shows, an hour long CPD training session for school staff, and then ending your day with a 45 minute after school show for families.

The amount of work is varied, so flexibility is key. We estimate that successful applicants will be booked in for 8 school visits per month, with more bookings in the months of March and September. The rate of pay is £190 per day (plus travel) for presenting and £100 per day while completing your training.

Please note that this role includes the use of pyrotechnics and other potentially hazardous materials. Full training will be given, and the successful candidates will be required to adhere to all Ri risk assessments and health and safety guidelines.

  • Have experience in presenting to children and adults
  • Are skilled communicators
  • Have the knowledge and confidence to deliver science shows
  • Can act as an ambassador for the Royal Institution
  • Have experience of handling chemicals and/or pyrotechnics, or are willing to learn
  • Can manage their own admin and record keeping, and work with us to ensure we maximise the number of schools who can access our shows
  • Are committed to exciting shows that keep everyone’s Health and Safety front and centre

 You will also need:

  • A full driving licence and access to a vehicle
  • To be available on these dates
    • 9 or 10 February for remote interview
    • 22 to 26 Feb and 1 to 3 March (inclusive) for training (£100 per day)

All offers of work are subject to applicants completing relevant safeguarding training, providing references and enhanced DBS checks that are satisfactory to the Ri.
