Renowned internationally for its research excellence supporting a sustainable ocean, Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) has an exciting opportunity for a Head of Marketing & Communications. 

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with demonstrable experience in the marketing and communication of environmental science to lead a team of specialists in a world-leading research organization.

PML is known for delivering impactful and award-winning science, from the poles to the tropics, and from lakes to the open ocean.  On World Oceans Day we launched our new PML Strategy (2020-2025) setting out our mission to enhance our position as a world leader in the field of marine science, whilst focusing on our vision of a healthy and sustainable ocean. 

It is an important time for the ocean with key international drivers being the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the “double decade” of action – The Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, and the Decade of Ecosystem Restoration. 

Our new Strategy reflects this international context, as well as national and regional initiatives, and focuses on the delivery of four strategic aims:

  • Science excellence and impact
  • Business excellence
  • Social responsibility
  • Environmental responsibility

The Head of Marketing & Communications will have a key role to play in supporting the delivery of these aims.

PML Applications Ltd is the commercial arm of PML, with a different customer base, providing services in the sectors of ballast water, marine biofouling and corrosion, remote sensing applications and environmental solutions.

Job Purpose:

The Head of Marketing & Communications is responsible for providing leadership, strategic vision and management of the marketing and communications of PML Group, supporting the delivery of PML’s and PML Applications Ltd’s strategies in the UK and internationally.

Key Deliverables:

  • Review and lead on the implementation of the Marketing & Communications strategy for PML, increasing the reach and impact of PML’s profile and visibility through the delivery of creative but measured and considered marketing, communications and PR in the UK and internationally, contributing to the development of new partnerships and funding opportunities.
  • Review and lead on the implementation of the Marketing & Communications strategy for PML Applications, with a view to enhancing the company’s profile, brand awareness and attracting new customers.
  • Provide strategic and operational marketing and communications guidance and advice to the Executive teams of both PML and PML Applications, and lead on complex communications matters and projects, both internally and externally.
  • Develop and manage the Marketing & Communications team, including mentoring and training in order to maintain a high quality, customer focused service, both internally and externally,
  • Develop new and maintain existing relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including PML and PML Applications staff, the media, marketing & communications leads at other partner organisations, and suppliers.
  • Prepare and manage the annual Marketing & Communications budget ensuring its efficient and effective use; monitor and report as required, exercising good budgetary control and negotiating skills with suppliers.
  • Lead on and/or undertake market analysis and research in support of strategic business development.
  • Keep abreast of developments within the marketing and communications sector, and apply these as appropriate within the PML Group.
  • Ensure that any regulatory or compliance requirements, such as copyright and data protection are met.
  • Demonstrate PML’s core values.

Experience & Eligibility Requirements

Our ideal candidate will have

  • A strong track record in leading and managing a marketing and communications team, preferably in a scientific/ academic organisation.
  • A minimum of a degree level or equivalent qualification in marketing/communications; evidence of management training having been undertaken.
  • Experience in developing and motivating staff to provide visible and supportive leadership.
  • An ability to manage staff, within a context of a number of competing, and sometimes very urgent, priorities/demands.
  • A demonstrable ability to produce and manage a budget.
  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills, and an ability to identify, distil and convey key messages in a succinct manner.
  • A proven track record in establishing positive relationships with people (internal and external) at various levels, including key stakeholders.
  • High levels of creativity in ideas generation, and be able to solve problems.
  • A high degree of professionalism, business understanding, integrity and credibility.
  • An ability to understand complex information, with the need to market and communicate PML science in a considered and effective manner.
  • An ability to market a commercial-facing company’s services (for PML Applications).

Sound computing skills, including use of Microsoft Office applications.  Awareness of specialist software, e.g. Adobe Creative Suite.
