As part of BIG's role in promoting excellence in science communication we are pleased to announce our upcoming skills day.
What will happen at this Skills Day?
This BIG Skills Day is for anyone who develops and delivers informal science learning experiences, especially for young people. It is led by Bridget Holligan, Director of Education and Engagement for Science Oxford, with contributions from her long-time collaborator, Mike Dennis, and from members of Bridget’s team at Science Oxford. Bridget has worked in the ISL sector for nearly 30 years and in 2020 was the recipient of the Beetlestone Award for her vision and leadership in ISL.
Since 2012, Bridget has been developing and implementing an ethos for inclusive science learning called ‘Thinking, Doing, Talking Science’(TDTS). The impact of the TDTS approach has been independently evaluated via regional and national Randomised Controlled Trials funded by the Education Endowment Foundation, and has been shown to make a significant positive difference to children’s self-efficacy and attainment in science, especially for children with lower science capital. In 2019, Bridget, together with Mike, led the creation of a new indoor-outdoor science centre, the Science Oxford Centre, that has all of its content and programmes founded on the TDTS ethos of inclusive challenge and increased opportunities for higher order thinking.
During this event you will have the opportunity to learn more about the evidence-based TDTS approach and what it looks like at the point of delivery – be that hands-on exhibits, workshops, shows or outdoor learning. You will learn how TDTS overlaps with good science capital practice and how you can embed the approach to your own work – making small changes for big impact that will help to nurture the science capital of young people over time. You will have plenty of opportunity to discuss your ideas with like-minded colleagues as well as to play, explore and discover at the Science Oxford Centre – including the 15 acres of woodland and new outdoor Water Lab exhibit!
