    Calling all Science Presenters

    Would you like to capture the imagination of children and young people by sharing your passion for science? 

     

    We are growing our team of Science In School presenters here at the Royal Institution (Ri).

    The Royal Institution (Ri) is an independent charity providing science education and heritage activities for people of all ages and backgrounds across the UK and around the world. These include the world-famous CHRISTMAS LECTURES,  a national programme of Masterclasses for young people in mathematics and computer science, science workshops in our L’Oréal Young Scientist Centre, and animations and films from our YouTube channel.

     

    Our team of professional presenters have an infectious enthusiasm and love for science that inspires audiences, entertaining and educating in equal measure. We are looking for presenters who can deliver engaging science shows to children in primary and secondary schools across the UK, and who are confident in sharing their knowledge with teachers and school staff.  

     

    If successful, you will be delivering our popular science shows and professional development training sessions in schools across the country. We will provide you with the scripts, the props, the training, and the bookings… all you need to focus on is delivering amazing shows that engage and enthral our audiences with the wonders of science. 

      

    A typical day as a Royal Institution Science in Schools presenter would involve driving to the school, setting up and delivering two one-hour long student shows, an hour long CPD training session for school staff, and then ending your day with a 45 minute after school show for families.  

     

    The amount of work is varied, so you will need to be flexible. The estimated number of bookings vary by region, with all presenters receiving more bookings in the months of March and September. The freelance rate of pay is £200 per day (plus travel) for presenting and £100 per day while completing your training.  Annualised hours contracts may also be available and can be discussed on an individual basis at interview. 

    We currently have four positions available in the following regions:

    • London 
    • East of England (inc. Cambridgeshire and Norfolk) 
    • North-East of England (inc. Newcastle and Middlesborough) 
    • Scotland   

    This role includes the use of pyrotechnics and other potentially hazardous materials. Full training will be given, and the successful candidates will be required to adhere to all Ri risk assessments and health and safety guidelines.

    • Have experience in presenting educational content (not necessarily science-based) to children and adults, with the ability to engage and excite audiences of all ages 
    • Are a skilled performer with the confidence and ability to learn new content quickly and present to live audiences   
    • Can act as an ambassador for the Royal Institution   
    • Are committed to delivering exciting shows that keep everyone’s Health and Safety front and centre  
    • And have a full driving licence and access to a vehicle (mileage will be paid)

    The Royal Institution (Ri) runs a year-round programme of inspirational public science talks from our famous Theatre. We enable world-class scientists and researchers to deliver spectacular and engaging talks to a wide range of diverse audiences with support from our infamous Demonstrations team and using the stories and objects from our heritage and archives.

    We are looking for a Science Talks Producer, to develop, curate, host and manage innovative STEM events which are fascinating, entertaining, scientific and inclusive and will grow our audiences.  You will collaborate with speakers, hosts, sponsors and stakeholders as well as with teams across the Ri to ensure the programme has a distinctive Ri quality, is relevant and cutting edge, and effectively publicised and evaluated.  

    Location: Albemarle St, London with opportunity for some remote working
    Contract type: Permanent, Part-time/Full-time, 28 to 35 hours per week including evening and weekend work
    Salary: c. £38k per annum (pro-rata for part-time)

    Science Oxford Centre Officer

    The Oxford Trust is looking to increase its Science Oxford Centre team to support the on-site delivery of primary school programming and some public openings. This enjoyable and varied role is available part-time or full-time, to deliver engaging and exciting experiences to visiting school groups between Tuesdays to Fridays and to oversee public family visits on one Saturday per month. Full training will be provided. If you have experience and/or an interest in science, and enjoy engaging with young people and families, this could be the role for you.

     

    Rate of pay: from £25,000 per annum, depending on experience

    Communications, Events and Engagement Manager

    Medical Research Council (MRC) - Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS)

    The LMS is a world-class research laboratory where scientists and clinicians collaborate to advance the understanding of biology and its application to medicine. Funded by the MRC as part of UK Research and Innovation, the LMS has a collaborative working culture and a new state-of-the-art building next to the Hammersmith Hospital Campus.

    Based in the Grants, Engagement and Communications Team (GECo) the Communications, Events and Engagement Manager will support the Head of GECo in raising the profile of the LMS through carefully curated outreach and engagement activities, and through effective communication.

    The Communications, Events and Engagement Manager will lead on the Institute’s science communication and research dissemination through effective press and social media outputs, while establishing goals and objectives for internal and external communications which will deliver impact from our research.

    The postholder will project manage a variety of exciting projects, that aim to increase diversity in science research, and reach the Director’s strategic vision of translational science. Developing good working relations with local organisations and educational establishments is also crucial to instigate and create effective outreach initiatives.

    The Communications, Events and Engagement Manager will also line manage two Officers, ensuring local targets are met.

    This is a prime opportunity for an ambitious communications and engagement specialist with an interest in biomedical science, to make their mark as an innovative science communicator.  

     

    The successful candidate will have an understanding of biomedical science and how to creatively communicate research to scientific audiences. They will have good project management skills and be adept at using digital tools for creative work.

    The Ri provides science education and heritage activities for people of all ages and backgrounds across the UK and around the world.     We are currently looking for a Demonstrations Technician to help develop engaging and world class scientific demonstrations for our Public, Family, and Schools programming, including the CHRISTMAS LECTURES.

    You will maintain the Demo room, machinery and storage, the Demo Asset register for props and demonstration equipment and ensure maintenance is carried out in line with relevant risk mitigation. You will also support the coordination of the team, liaising with colleagues, and coordinating props to ensure effective use of resources.

    Lab Manager (LifeLab)

    Salary: £25-27,000 per annum

    Hours: Full-time (37 hours per week) permanent

     

    We are looking for a highly motivated, Lab Manager to join our Schools and Communities team to support curriculum-linked workshops in our labs. The role involves working within a fast-paced, busy environment with hundreds of school students visiting every week to enjoy being scientists and investigating the world around them.

     

    Your duties will be managing the labs and prep room in Lifelab, providing technical expertise, planning, delivery and safe operation of technical resources, supervising the Lab Technician and troubleshooting technical problems. You will oversee day to day running and help provide a well maintained, clean, safe and visitor-focused experience for schools and communities. You will manage all materials and equipment, maintaining stocks and ordering as needed, and ensure appropriate disposal of wastes and any hazardous material.

     

    The successful candidate will have experience of working within a similar role in a busy lab or school environment. With practical skills in setting up and supporting the delivery of activities and experiments, you will be a confident, approachable and reliable individual with excellent organisational skills. Knowledge of a range of laboratory techniques and experience across STEM disciplines including molecular biology and DNA techniques (e.g. PCR) used to A-level is essential.

    We are looking to build our Explainer team and are looking for people who are as passionate as we are about engaging people with science. 

    As someone who is customer focused, your role as an Explainer will be to make a visit to Life exciting, entertaining, informative and fun and to enhance the experience of all visitors.  You will be interacting with a wide range of audiences, but primarily families and school children and occasionally on outreach in schools and community settings. You will be a confident performer who can deliver hands-on science activities including live shows. You will enhance the experience of visitors around the science centre - covering all exhibitions, activities, and different workshops.   

    You  will be interested in STEM and will be curious, enthusiastic, have excellent communication skills and enjoy presenting to audiences. You will also share our desire to help everyone understand better the relevance of science to their lives. Comprehensive training will be provided. 

    The science centre is open all year round and is particularly busy at  weekends and school holidays so physical stamina, good humour and the ability to work at a high standard for long periods are all essential pre requisites of the role. The hours will vary to meet the needs of the business; therefore, a flexible approach will be required.

    Eden Scott is delighted to be working with Dynamic Earth, a charity Launched in 1999.

    They are looking for a Science Learning & Engagement Director, this is a key leadership role and will lead strategy and delivery for science engagement across public, schools, community and outreach programmes. Increasingly you will focus on engagement specific to climate crisis and sustainability themes.

    Dynamic Earth has attracted over five million visitors since opening its doors and engage with circa 250,000 people a year, including many families, school groups, and business professionals.

    Key responsibilities of the role:

    Strategic leadership – You will form a key part of the senior leadership team, working closely with the Board on strategy and delivery for all charity matters.

    People management – You will model effective leadership across the charity as well as directly managing the Learning & Engagement Directorate.

    Lead on scientific policy – You will ensure there is a robust approach to scientific accuracy in all of the Charity’s messaging and engagement activities.

    Manage strategy and delivery for learning, outreach and community – You will ensure we maximise the quality and range of earth science engagement they deliver.

    Provide science guidance to the Science Centre & Planetarium teams to ensure all galleries, exhibitions and activities are accurate as well as compelling. This will include leading on the science storytelling for future gallery redevelopments.

    Key skills and experience required:

    STEM engagement experience – We are looking for a leader with demonstrable STEM experience. You will know how to deliver science specific engagement.

    Science degree – You will have a formal science education background, preferably specific to earth science and related fields.

    Leadership experience – You will know how to form part of a shared leadership team, as well as provide effective functional leadership to a directorate team.

    Strategy and policy – You will have extensive experience at developing strategies and building a library of supporting policies to shape delivery.

    Formal learning environment – You will understand the structure of formal learning across Scotland and know how to ensure an organisation can align with the existing educational framework •

    Excellent communication skills – You will be very experienced at handling speeches, podcasts, media opportunities to further an organisation’s reputation and aims.

    Desirable skills:

    A professional or personal interest in earth science and environmental issues

    An empathy for what Dynamic Earth exists to deliver

    Experience in working for an organization that runs one or more visitor attractions as part of its overall proposition
