The Royal Institution are looking for x3 Phd students to join their Digital Team for a three month internship to gain experience of digital media and science communication. These internships will run consecutively from September 2022 to July 2023, with some flexibility around exact start dates.

You will be based at the Royal Institution offices in Mayfair, London. Working closely with all members of the Digital Team, this role will support the Ri’s digital content production and platforms. Depending on the candidate’s interests and experience, we will provide some basic training in audio and video production. A typical day will include: creating science engagement content for our social media platforms, helping film and livestream events, helping manage our YouTube channel and develop our podcasts and working on our social media and digital offering around the world famous CHRISTMAS LECTURES.

This placement is ideal for anyone interested in learning more about digital media and harnessing its’ potential to communicate science to diverse and global audiences.

The opportunity is only open to PhD students who are eligible for an internship as part of their PhD programme and receive a stipend from their Doctoral Training Programme (DTP). Please check with your university/DTP to ensure funding is available before applying.

The Role

Kingston University has a growing demand from schools, colleges and community groups to utilise its state-of-the-art Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) outreach provision, including both a dedicated STEM Outreach Centre and two mobile ‘lab in a lorry’ facilities. The STEM Outreach Intern will be key to the successful delivery and development of our STEM outreach work which aims to inspire learners to progress to higher education and in particular into STEM disciplines.

You will be responsible for managing the day to day operation of our STEM outreach provision, including driving the ‘lab in a lorry’ vans to/from events (training and support will be available to the successful candidate). You will ensure the smooth running and safe operation of the STEM Outreach Centre, as well as ensuring that all equipment is clean, well-organised and safe.  Much of your time will be spent out of the office supporting events either within the STEM Outreach Centre or at locations across London and the South East when driving the ‘lab in a lorry’ vans.

The successful candidate will join a supportive and enthusiastic team and will be supported in their professional development. This role requires occasional evening/weekend working, for which time off in lieu will be granted.

The Person

You must have a graduate or equivalent background in a STEM subject. A full, clean & valid driving licence is essential as the post holder will be required to drive the University’s ‘Lab in a Lorry’ vans to schools and colleges within the region. The ideal candidate will have some experience of working with school and college pupils. You will have excellent organisational and project management skills, with the ability to adapt to problems and work with colleagues to find solutions. Strong administrative and IT skills are essential, whilst experience of a CRM system would be beneficial. The ideal candidate will have the ability to lead STEM experiments/demonstrations or the ability to do so and the willingness to learn and develop in this area.

The Royal Institution runs a year-round programme of inspirational public science talks from the world’s greatest thinkers. Since the pandemic, the programme is made up of events which take place in our theatre and online.

Castlebrae High School in Craigmillar, Edinburgh, have a strong partnership history with The College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine (CMVM) and the wider Edinburgh BioQuarter. In April 2022, their new school campus will open with state-of-the-art science facilities, inspired by their co-location with Edinburgh BioQuarter. The facilities have the potential to be a ‘Community Science SuperLab’ out of school hours. The post-holder will help drive forward this exciting and creative opportunity and support the development and implementation of formal and informal STEM Education opportunities with the communities neighbouring Edinburgh BioQuarter.

The successful candidate will join the Communications, Marketing and Engagement team in the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. We are a busy, dynamic team who together deliver online, hybrid and in-person events, support undergraduate and postgraduate recruitment activity, and lead on engagement with research across the College.

About the Team

The College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine The College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine traces its origins back nearly 500 years (Darwin, Simpson and Conan-Doyle were students here) and is internationally renowned for its research and teaching. Professor Moira Whyte is the Head of College, the only conjoint Medical and Veterinary Medical School in the UK. The College employs over 3000 academic and support staff. The College has two Schools, the Edinburgh Medical School comprising 3 Deaneries; Biomedical Sciences; Molecular Genetic and Population Health Sciences and Clinical Sciences and the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies.

The undergraduate medicine teaching programme in the College enjoys a high reputation nationally and internationally, with over 1,300 students enrolled on the MBChB and Intercalated courses and nearly 1000 on the Veterinary Sciences BVS and related programmes. The Engineering Education Scheme Wales Ltd is currently seeking a Project Administrative Assistant based in Bridgend to provide administrative support for projects covering the local authority areas of Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Conwy & Denbighshire who will work under the direction of the EESW Chief Executive Officer and Lead Project Officer to provide administrative support to Project Deliverers offering pilot activities to schools.

 

The aim of the Project is to deliver interactive activities and experiences to expose both primary and secondary school pupils to the excitement and wonders of manufacturing and engineering and make them aware of the range of innovative and rewarding careers available in the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing, Creative and Digital and Energy and Environment sectors in the region.  Activities developed will vary from hands-on practical engineering/manufacturing experiences to meeting industrial mentors and gaining knowledge of what Welsh manufacturers do and what they produce.

 

EESW requires an Administrative Assistant to primarily input data from participant forms to

spreadsheets for monitoring purposes required by the funding agreements.

 

This is a fixed term contract until 31^st December 2022 working on the above project.

Development (Fundraising) Manager - Maternity Cover

We’re looking for somebody who is collaborative, organised and an excellent communicator to join our small but energetic team of three fundraising staff plus volunteers.

As Development Manager Maternity Cover, you will use your skills in research and persuasion to identify grants funding opportunities, build relationships and write and submit proposals to trusts, foundations, Lottery funders and research councils. Working closely with the Head of Development, you will raise £280,000 for our programme of creative science learning and inclusion projects. In addition, you will work with other teams on projects such as the development of our fundraising database and creating engaging annual impact reports.
