Science Centres lobby Museums and Galleries Commission

The newly formed Museums and Libraries Commission (MLAC) has been meeting with a number of science centres, reports the December issue of Museums Journal. The centres are lobbying hard to be included within the new body’s remit, while it is still under development.

An incentive for the centres is MLAC’s role in distributing funding from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, including £30 million earmarked by the government to pay for free admission to national museums. Gillian Thomas, chief executive of at-Bristol, thinks MLAC funding should be made available to science centres for “ongoing revenue, education and programmes”.
