From the Editor

Dear All,

I suspect that by the time you receive this newsletter, the question posed on the cover will have been answered - the Dome either did or didn’t make it on time. The only thing I would predict with any certainty is that a lot of fuss was made over it. Anyway, we will publish a full review of the New Millennium Experience in the next newsletter.

This issue feels very millennial, containing as it does articles about endings and new beginnings. In addition to speculation about the new lottery-funded centres (p.4) we have short articles on a new project in South Africa (p.8) and the re-birth of an old attraction, the Micrarium (p.9). In contrast, Mike Coles writes to let us know what happened to the staff of the Exploratory following its closure in September (p.6). I’m sure all readers will wish success for everyone mentioned in their new ventures.

Historically, BIG has not been a campaigning organisation. It may be that this changes in the years ahead (that is largely up to you), but we could be seeing the start of a campaign on page 5 of this issue. Adam Love-Rodgers has collected some basic data that should alert everyone to the plight of Explainers. Anyone of us who has been an Explainer (or Enabler, Pilot, Facilitator, Host etc) won’t need reminding that pay is poor. However, seeing the figures in black and white does serve to remind us that the professionalism displayed by our floor staff is nothing short of amazing. Perhaps some recognition is due.
As reported elsewhere, BIG is gradually gaining a permanent online presence (even if we are a few years away from a permanent office). I hope you are able to make use of the new email addresses (especially the one above), and pass them on to colleagues as points of contact for BIG.

Finally, thank-you to all the people who have said nice things to me (in person, by letter or e-mail) about my stewardship of the BIG newsletter. Next year should see some more changes, including a new graphical identity for the group as a whole. I even hope to sort out the little administrative difficulties that have delayed every newsletter this year. Please keep writing to me, and I hope you continue to submit articles for your newsletter. Happy New Year!
