SatrosphereSatrosphere is in the midst of its New Year Theme “Energy” and is looking forward to the late spring and summer theme of “Waste not Want not”. We have at last managed to get £14,000 of landfill tax credits via a local contractor - Shanks and McEwan. The grant will be used to produce 5 or 6 new exhibits on conservation issues. Along with the Glasgow SATRO and the Edinburgh International Science Festival we have been awarded a grant from the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council to create a “Big Road Show” which will be launched in September 1998 in time for the Aberdeen Science Festival, TechFest. Satrosphere will produce 12 exhibits on space physics and particle physics for the travelling exhibition, which will be toured by Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh before being made available nation-wide later in 1999. Details of the “Road Show” can be obtained from Rebecca Crawford of Glasgow SATRO who is the leader of the project. Morag Christie, our Event Co-ordinator, has been awarded an International Technology Secondment to Questacon in Australia. She will be going out later this year for 3 months to find out how they run their outreach service, to study staff training and how to manage the change from a small science centre to a large one - without causing too much pain. Finally if you have bought a Strattman Crackle Disk (see
the last newsletter) and have had problems with the nasty little “Manual-Off-Auto”
switch. Fear not - you can ignore the warning signs and open up the power
supply and by pass it!
