The new year started with work on the main telescope dome to repair the shutter mechanism which allows the telescope to peer out at the heavens.

Retired astronomers and engineers who used to work at the observatory were invaluable in recollecting all the tricks and dodges need to undo and replace couplings which had not been touched for twenty years or more.

Everyone took the opportunity to ride on the platform of the crane high above domes and the Sussex for the magnificent views. Meanwhile as the sun set the final adjustments were made and the shutters were opened. How I love that place. A few more renovations and repairs should see the telescope ready for the programme of public observing evenings and events planned for 1998.
