BIG AGM

Science Museum, January 26th 1998

40 members attended the AGM held at the Science Museum. After a chance to chat to colleagues over coffee and excellent cakes and biscuits in the café, we moved into the lecture theatre.  

Richard Brown from the Royal College of Arts entertained us with an illustrated talk about the ways in which his design students have used imaginative interactive ideas in their project work on communication. Examples included a 3 dimensional e-mail reader, feathers that could be fluttered from elsewhere to tell someone you were thinking about them and an exhibit that you can use to transmit smells to evoke memories. It was a good talk with some useful and thought provoking ideas.

Richard then took part in a panel discussion on the current trends in interactive design with Steve Pizzey, Tim Hunkin, Harry White, Peter Trevitt and Dave Wilson.

During the lunch break members had an opportunity to visit the Science of Sport and the Challenge of Materials Galleries or to watch the new Materials show in Launchpad.

In the afternoon the retiring 97 officers presented their reports at the formal AGM. (See BIG Annual Report 1997.)

The new committee for 1998 was elected and are listed on the back page of this Newsletter.

The new committee invited the membership to give them some direction for the coming year. Among the suggestions from the floor were:

• More events for special interest groups e.g. shows, retail outlets.
• Some BIG meetings should be held in the north of England or in Scotland.
• The Directory could be produced in poster format.
• Links should be encouraged with ASE and BA meetings.
• BIG should develop some standard procedures to assist in design and development of exhibits and contract details.
