Indo-UK Science Festival

India February 2000

Four representatives of the Science Centre industry in the UK went to India to meet with officers of the British Council in Calcutta and the National Council of Science Museums in India (NCSM). The meeting was to set in motion the planning and preparation for an Anglo Indian Science festival to take place in India in 2002.

The British delegation consisted of Bhagwant Singh from the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, Melanie Quin from Techniquest in Cardiff, Andy Lloyd from the Science Museum in London and Alistair Flett from Satrosphere.

Five days were spent deciding on the main themes of the festival meeting in various venues (in and around Calcutta) controlled by NCSM. The end result is that the festival will consist of an exhibition of 50 exhibits plus demonstrations, drama and workshops which will spend 2 months in each of the 4 National Science Centres in India during the year 2002 starting in Calcutta in February. A month is allowed between each venue to allow for refurbishment and moving the exhibition.

The festival is to have 3 main themes: Biotechnology, Aviation + Space and Information Technology. The emphasis is to be on "cutting edge technology" and will feature as much, as possible, research projects jointly funded by the British Council and India. The interactive exhibits are to be designed and built in India by NCSM.

The ideas for the exhibits and shows etc and initial designs are to be produced by collaboration between the UK delegation and NCSM. In order to move the project along there will be 6-monthly meetings between the 2 teams. The next meeting will be in July in UK and will include the British Interactive Group Annual meeting at Herstmonceux Science Centre.
